The food we eat and how it is produced affects not only our health, but also the environment. In the revision and further development of the new dietary recommendations, environmental and climate aspects were included for the first time alongside nutritional and health effects and calculated using mathematical optimisation. Based on the modelling results, dietary recommendations with fish and meat and dietary recommendations without fish and meat were derived.
These dietary recommendations have now also been updated graphically to visualise the recommended ratio of different foods. The two nutrition pyramids show the newly calculated recommendations with and without fish and meat. Vegetable proteins in the form of pulses have been included as a new category for the first time. The amount of animal products has been reduced.
We developed the new Austrian dietary recommendations in collaboration with the Austrian Society for Nutrition (ÖGE) on behalf of the Climate and Health Competence Centre of Gesundheit Österreich GmbH (GÖG) and the Federal Ministry of Social Affairs, Health, Care and Consumer Protection (BMSGPK).
