Final Report of Priority Action A-020-17

The aim of the focus action was to collect data and provide a market overview with regard to the contamination of carton-packaged foods with the chemical compounds bisphenols and diisopropylnaphthalenes (DIPN). 73 samples from all over Austria were examined. None of the samples was objectionable. Dry, long-life foods are often packaged in cardboard. In recycled cartons, bisphenols and diisopropylnaphthalenes, which originate from thermal paper and carbonless paper, unintentionally end up in packaging cartons. In addition to the initial quality of the carton (recycled content or pure virgin fiber), the structure of the packaging was also examined. In particular, it was examined whether additional inner bags or other barrier layers were present to reduce mass transfers from the cartonboard
