The focus campaign examined internally coated food cans to determine whether the legal requirements for bisphenol A and bisphenol A diglycidyl ether (BADGE) were met. 47 samples from all over Austria were tested.
- No sample was rejected
The samples tested were soups, fish and meat products (corned beef, meat spreads, etc.) that were filled in tinplate cans. All cans or tins were coated on the inside. The coatings were polyether/BPA-based, polyester-based and polyvinyl chloride-based.
A specific migration limit (= the amount that may be released from the coating into the food) of 0.05 mg/kg has been in effect for bisphenol A since September 6, 2018. In addition, the extent to which other bisphenols (B, E, F and S) are used as substitutes as a starting material for interior coatings was also investigated.
