The objective of the focus action was to verify compliance with food law requirements regarding the release of heavy metals and other problematic elements. Materials, objects or devices made of ceramics, enamel, glass, metal or metal alloys were to be sampled from manufacturers, processors and importers. In addition, the sampled companies were to submit the available documents for self-verification and, if necessary, a declaration of conformity (KE). 30 samples from all over Austria were examined. Four samples were objected to:
- two samples did not comply with the Ceramics Ordinance
- one sample did not meet the requirements of the Ordinance on Plastic Food Contact Materials
- one sample was objected to under the Ordinance on the Use of Bisphenol A in Plastic Food Contact Materials.
None of the samples tested was objected to due to an increased release of heavy metals (e.g. lead, cadmium) or of other elements (e.g. antimony, aluminum, cobalt). The complaints were made on the basis of defective documents on conformity that did not meet the minimum legal requirements.
