The aim of the focus action was to monitor acrylamide levels in selected foods (cookies and wafers, roasted coffee, instant coffee, coffee substitutes, cookies and rusks for infants and young children, processed cereal-based foods and other processed foods for infants and young children). The background for the action was an EU regulation that came into force on April 11, 2018, which serves to establish minimization measures and guideline values for the reduction of acrylamide content in food.
68 samples from all over Austria were examined.
- All samples complied with the applicable guideline values.
Regulation (EU) 2017/2158 sets guideline values for acrylamide. However, these are not legal maximum levels. In the event that such a guideline value is exceeded, surveys are to be carried out in food companies in order to obtain further indications as to how the acrylamide content in food can be reduced.
