A large number of tablets have breakage notches which are supposed to allow divisibility into equal doses. Whether this is always guaranteed was the subject of a study in which 27 state control laboratories from 22 European countries participated. The study was based on monograph 0478 Compressi of the European Pharmacopoeia. The tests covered a cross-section of different preparations with simple or cross-fracture grooves. A large number of tablets were found not to meet the European Pharmacopoeia requirements for divisibility.
