Safe food is no coincidence, it is the result of scientific expertise, modern analytics and close cooperation. AGES analyses thousands of food samples every year and supports the health authorities in the rapid detection and containment of disease outbreaks caused by salmonella or listeria, for example. With over 15,000 entries, AGES operates the largest Listeria database in Europe. "With its scientific expertise, modern analytics and comprehensive database, AGES makes a decisive contribution to the clarification of food-borne outbreaks. In this way, we not only strengthen food safety in Austria, but also the public's trust in a functioning system along the entire food chain," emphasises AGES Managing Director Johannes Pleiner-Duxneuner.
Food safety starts at home: tips from the EU #Safe2Eat campaign
As part of the EU-wide #Safe2Eat information campaign, AGES, together with the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA), is providing information about risks and ways to reduce these risks: the majority of foodborne illnesses occur at home. Errors during storage, transport or preparation can lead to a food that is safe in itself becoming harmful to health. The #Safe2Eat campaign therefore raises awareness of simple but effective everyday measures, such as the correct storage of fruit and vegetables or tips for barbecuing in summer.
