Food control: ready meals

We have examined dishes that are already prepared and delivered to consumers. In 48 of 1,296 samples from all over Austria, the bacterial contamination was in part far too high.

The focus campaign included unpackaged, ready-prepared meals that are offered hot or cold, as well as pre-packaged rolls or sandwiches from the retail trade. They came from inns, hotels, guesthouses, canteens, nursing homes, residential homes, hospitals, boarding schools, schools, kindergartens as well as snack stands, self-service restaurants and supermarkets.

We tested these meals for germs indicating spoilage or hygiene deficiencies, but also for pathogens such as Bacillus cereus and Listeria. Three samples were harmful to health because of these pathogens, and in another 45 samples the germ load was in some cases very high. The food authorities are taking appropriate measures and carrying out renewed checks.
