7 November: European Radon Day

Radon is the second most common cause of lung cancer in Austria after smoking. The European Radon Association has designated 7 November - Marie Curie's birthday - as Radon Day. The aim is to raise awareness of radon.

Radon is a radioactive noble gas that occurs everywhere in the ground. It can penetrate buildings from the ground through cracks in the foundations or in pipes and accumulate in the indoor air. If it is inhaled over a long period of time, it can damage lung tissue. The actual radon concentration in a building can only be determined by measurement.

Many countries in Europe are setting an example and drawing public and media attention to the issue of radon. This year, for the first time, our radon centre is organising its own radon week, during which the annual radon network meeting and an information event on radon protection will take place in Oetz in Tyrol.
