Trans fatty acids in food from ethnic food stores

Final report of the priority action A-008-18

The aim of the priority action A-008-18 "Trans fatty acids in food from ethno-food stores" was to check compliance with the provisions of the trans fatty acids ordinance (Ordinance of the Federal Minister of Health on the content of trans fatty acids in food, Federal Law Gazette II No. 267/2009, as amended) in the case of bakery products containing fat and other food from third countries that are available in ethno-food stores. 59 samples from all over Austria were examined. 16 samples were objected to:

  • In two samples, the levels of trans fatty acids were too high. One of these two samples also had labeling deficiencies
  • In 14 samples, the labeling did not comply with the Food Information Regulation (EU) No. 1169/2011

In previous investigations of products from third countries drawn from ethno-food stores, these were found to have elevated levels of trans fatty acids.
