The aim of the priority action "Organic trace substances (selected pesticides and metabolites) in drinking water - monitoring" was to survey the possible contamination of drinking water with selected pesticides and their metabolites (degradation products) throughout Austria. 260 samples from all over Austria were examined. Twelve samples were rejected: In them, the parameter value for pesticide active substances or relevant metabolites of 0.1 μg/l was exceeded. According to the Drinking Water Ordinance, the parameter value for pesticides is 0.1 µg/l. This value represents a strict precautionary value to keep groundwater and drinking water as free as possible from pesticides. Generous safety margins are taken into account, i.e. immediate health effects cannot be derived if the value is exceeded.

Monitoring actions clarify certain issues, but do not result in any immediate measures. The competent authorities are, however, informed of any suspected infringement of food regulations.
