The aim of the priority action was to check the nitrate content of vegetables (especially green leafy vegetables).

As part of this focus campaign, 155 samples originating exclusively from Austria were analysed in the period from March to November 2023:

• None of the samples analysed were objected to because the maximum content was exceeded beyond doubt
• In three samples (1x iceberg lettuce, 1x rocket, 1x spinach - fresh) the maximum level was not exceeded beyond doubt only taking into account the measurement uncertainty
• The action value for nitrate was exceeded in two samples of red beetroot (raw beans)
