The aim of the Priority Action A-918-17 "National Control Program Pesticides" was to generate a representative and reliable database for the assessment of consumer exposure to pesticide residues and to monitor compliance with the legal maximum residue levels of pesticides in selected foodstuffs. Of the 799 samples examined from all over Austria, 17 samples were objected to:

• in 12 samples the maximum levels for at least one pesticide active ingredient were exceeded, in six samples the food samples were to be classified as "not safe, unsuitable for human consumption" after expert risk assessment due to the exhaustion of the toxicological reference values.
• Six samples were rejected on suspicion of violating the regulations of the EU Organic Regulation or misleading with regard to the claim "from organic farming".
