The aim of the focus action "N-nitrosodiethanolamine (NDELA) in mascara and shampoos" was to obtain information on the NDELA content in mascara and shampoos. Fifty-eight samples from all over Austria were examined. Three samples of these were objected to:

• Two samples were objected to because of inadequate labeling.
• One sample was objected to because of a significantly increased NDELA concentration

N-nitrosodiethanolamine (NDELA) is a chemical compound belonging to the so-called N-nitrosamines. NDELA can damage the genetic material and contribute to the development of cancer. It must therefore not be contained in cosmetic products, with the exception of technically unavoidable amounts that do not pose a health risk.
