Microbiology of soft drinks from dispensing equipment

Final Report of Priority Action A-025-18

This focus action was carried out to obtain information on the hygiene status of soft drinks from dispensing facilities. 51 samples from all over Austria were examined. 15 samples (29.4%) were rejected:

  • eight samples were found to exceed the maximum levels for microbiological parameters
  • five samples were not suitable for human consumption because of coliform bacteria
  • in one sample, fragments of chitinous carapace were detectable, indicating the presence of insects.

Dispensing equipment must be in perfect technical and hygienic condition. With regard to hygiene, the immediate environment is also of essential importance. Only regular, thorough and professional cleaning can ensure perfect hygienic condition. The entrepreneur (e.g. landlord/landlady) is responsible for the training of the personnel, for cleaning and maintenance of the dispensing equipment and for the documentation.
