The aim of the priority action was to review the current situation on the Austrian market. Contaminants in these product groups are only partially regulated by EU legislation. Although the content of total mercury is regulated by EU regulations, methylmercury, which is of relevance to health, is not. The heavy metals lead and cadmium are regulated throughout the EU, while a national action value has been set for inorganic arsenic in fish and seafood.
73 samples from all over Austria were analysed. One sample was rejected:
- A tuna sample was objected to for exceeding the maximum permitted level of mercury. The risk assessment did not reveal any health hazards
