Foot and mouth disease last occurred in Austria in 1981.

Slovakia and Hungary last reported further outbreaks of foot-and-mouth disease on 31 March 2025 (Slovakia) and 26 March 2025 (Hungary); both the Slovakian and Hungarian cases are in the immediate vicinity of the border and the surveillance zones extend into Austrian territory.

On 02.04.2025 Hungary reported two more FMD cases, Austria is not affected by a surveillance zone.
