A disinfectant mat can be used as part of the disinfection lock. However, the tyres of vehicles should be cleaned beforehand so that the disinfectant can take effect. It is also important that the disinfectant is effective against FMD and is changed regularly (according to the manufacturer's instructions, in the event of soiling, dilution by rainwater, etc.). The mat itself must be at least 3.5 metres long. If space permits, it should be 7 metres long to allow two full tyre rotations through the disinfectant. The tyres should be completely covered with disinfectant. Disinfectant sprayers can be used in addition to the disinfectant mats. When disinfecting shoes (e.g. rubber boots), a deeper tray is recommended instead of a mat to achieve better coverage of the boot.
The German Veterinary Medical Association (DVG) tests disinfectants for use in animal husbandry. The tested disinfectants are summarised in a database (FMD: column 7a non-enveloped viruses)
