The goose grass originates from tropical and subtropical regions, so it needs higher temperatures to thrive. It is currently found sporadically in the east and south-east of Austria. However, it is expected to spread further as a result of climate change.
In its original area of distribution, goose grass is considered a major weed; it ranks fifth in the list of "World Worst Weeds" (the plants responsible for the most crop failures). Goose grass is adapted to warm regions with high levels of light. Here, it benefits from the warm summer and mild autumn temperatures of recent years. This extends its growing period and thus its ability to produce germinable seeds.
