Food contact materials (FCMs) are all materials and articles, including active and intelligent food contact materials and articles, which as a finished product are intended or foreseeably intended to come into contact with food or are already in contact with food. These are regulated by Regulation (EC) No. 1935/2004.

Since 2004, the Department of Consumer Goods and Cosmetics (GEKO) of the Institute for Food Safety Vienna (LSV) has been the National Reference Laboratory for Food Contact Materials.

• Participation in the preparation of technical guidelines for the harmonization of quality standards and harmonization in testing of food contact materials;
• Elaboration of reference analytical methods at European level;L
• Exchange of information and maintenance of national and international contacts in the field of food contact materials;
• Providing expert opinions and information;
